Over the past years the caganers have made news outside Spain. They are little clay statuettes portraying the act of defecation and traditionally they decorate a corner in the Catalan Nativity scenes at Christmas. There are numerous reports on them in foreign press, but the inventive Catalans have found another way to delight Christmas shoppers in this festive season!

Catalonia and Its Caganers

Catalonia is one of the seventeen Autonomous Communities in Spain with Barcelona as capital city. It has its own government (Generalitat de Catalunya), constitution, language and culture. It did not fall under Spanish rule until its incorporation into the Crown of Aragon in the thirteenth century. Catalan is the official language besides Spanish, which acts as a second language to the natives.

Starting from the first weekend of December, the caganers sit tightly as one of the attractions in Christmas fairs in Catalonia. The biggest Christmas fair for caganers is outside the Cathedral in Barcelona. One can also find these little figures in other surrounding cities. This year they are even on show at the Christmas market at Plaza Mayor in Madrid, and they are available online.
